The New York Football Giants signed Head Coach Tom Coughlin to a new three year contract. He had one more year left on his current deal, but the Giants ripped it out and gave him a new three year deal worth 20 million dollars.The two time Super-Winning coach could have left after the Super Bowl like Tony La Russa left the Cardinals after their World Series Championship last year. La Russa was coming off his THIRD World Series title and was two years Coughlin’s senior at 67. Some might have thought that the contract extension would have been longer, But espn’s dan graziano writes don’t assume this contract will be his last.
Coach Coughlin is already the oldest coach in the NFL. Teams look for younger fiery coaches and most importantly, a coach that can connect with his players. Coughlin notoriously did not get along with Plaxico Burress and the Giants had an opportunity to bring him back last year and this year both times Tom Coughlin said, “No thank you”. Once players “buy into” Coughlin’s rigid rules such as being 5 minutes “early ” to a meeting is late; things work out such as Super Bowl wins. Coach is a great motivator and just when you think the Giants are finished they win and don’t stop winning till the Super Bowl.
Should a two-time Super winning Coach leave on his own terms, even if the Giants don’t make the playoffs for the next three years? I think so, Coughlin deserves a place in Giants history as one of the All-time great coaches and the best giants coach ever not named Parcells. This was his third Super Bowl win as a coach with the giants; his first win with the Giants came back in 1990 when he was the Wide Receivers coach. After that season he became head football coach of the Boston College Eagles and never looked back. Think about it, most coaches are lucky to win one Super Bowl and he has three. Without his leadership and non-stop motivation who knows if the Giants win in 2008 and last year. All I know is, if he keeps this up 1990 New York Giants Super Bowl team will feature arguably the best three coaches i Bill Parcells, Bill Belichick and Tom Coughlin the NFL has ever seen and one of the most dominating defensive players ever in Lawrence Taylor
